8. Summary


On completion of the experiment you should have:

  1. A basic understanding of what stellar motions are and how they are measured.
     
  2. A general idea of the astronomer's co-ordinate system, i.e. RA and Dec.
     
  3. By inspecting the 1937 and 1960 images, a value for the proper motion (plus its uncertainty) of Barnard's star.
     
  4. An estimate of the position of Barnard's star on the Durham image from 2000 and a consistency check of the proper motion.
     
  5. Undertaken some basic analysis of the results.
